What does I LOVE YOU Mean in Morse Code?

What Does 'I Love You" Mean in Morse Code?

I LOVE YOU in Morse Code is •• | •-••   ---   •••-   • | -•--   ---   ••-

Each dot and dash represents a letter, and the spaces between the three words are shown here with a vertical line.

Here's how the phrase breaks down:

I •

L • - • •

O - - -

V • • • -

E •

Y - • - -

O - - -

U • • -

But what if you could take those dots and dashes and turn them into something someone could wear every day?

That's exactly what I do.

I'm Trish, the silversmith behind Trisha Flanagan Jewelry. I've been working with sterling silver for over 20 years, and one of my favorite things about making Morse Code jewelry is turning ordinary word into something deeply personal.

And honestly, I think I LOVE YOU is one of the most meaningful messages you can wear.

How Do You Write I LOVE YOU in Morse Code Jewelry?

I use International Morse Code for every Morse Code piece I make. But there's one important difference between traditional written Morse Code and how I turn a message into jewelry.

In traditional Morse Code, individual letters and words have specific spacing between them. A word gap is equivalent to seven dashes.

When I'm making an I LOVE YOU necklace or bracelet, I don't include those traditional word gaps.

Instead, I treat the entire phrase as one continuous message, keeping the dots and dashes together.

Why?

Because if I included all the traditional word spacing, the finished pieces would become unnecessarily long. And the goal is to create jewelry that's beautiful and comfortable to wear, not something that stretches all the way around your neck.

The letters remain in the correct order, so the message is still I LOVE YOU. I've simply adapted the spacing to work as a wearable design.

Will the Person Receiving It Know What It Says?

Absolutely.

Every Morse Code piece I make comes with a translation card that identifies the hidden message.

There's no need for the recipient to know Morse Code or spend their evening trying to figure out what all those dots and dashes mean.

Unless, of course, they're the kind of person who enjoys a little puzzle.

Curious about how to read the message yourself? I've written a guide on How to Decode Your Morse Code Jewelry, including a downloadable Morse Code chart so you can try translating messages yourself.

Why Give Someone I LOVE YOU Morse Code Jewelry?

Here's something I've thought about quite a bit.

Sometimes it's hard to say "I love you" out loud.

And sometimes we forget to say it altogether because we assume the people closest to us already know.

Our partners know. Our kids know. Our best friends know.

But do we actually tell them enough?

I think an I LOVE YOU Morse Code necklace or bracelet is a lovely way to remind someone how much they mean to you without having to find the perfect words every time.

The jewelry does a little of that work for you.

And the message is always there, even when you're not.

Why Keep the Message Hidden?

Personally, I think there's something more meaningful about a message that isn't immediately obvious to everyone else.

You could give someone jewelry with I LOVE YOU written across it in big letters. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But having those words spelled out for everyone to see can sometimes take away from the personal connection between the two people.

With Morse Code, someone looking at the jewelry sees an interesting sterling silver design.

But the person wearing it knows exactly what it says.

And so does the person who gave it to them.

It's a little secret between the two of you.

I love that.

A Morse Code Gift That Reminds Someone They're Loved, Even From Far Away

One of the moments that has stayed with me happened at a market.

A mother and father were looking for something meaningful for their daughter, who was about to travel and then head away to college.

They chose an I LOVE YOU Morse Code necklace for her.

I thought that was such a lovely gift.

Their daughter was about to start a whole new chapter of her life, experiencing new places, meeting new people, and becoming more independent.

And her parents wanted her to have a reminder that she was loved, no matter where she went.

That's the beauty of meaningful jewelry.

It doesn't have to be expensive or extravagant to carry a powerful message. Sometimes a few carefully placed dots and dashes say everything,

Should You Choose an I LOVE YOU Morse Code Necklace or Bracelet?

I make I LOVE YOU Morse Code jewelry in both necklace and bracelet styles, and customers often wonder which one makes the better gift.

My advice?

If you're unsure, I'd choose the necklace.

Why I Recommend the Necklace for Gifting

In my experience, more women wear necklaces than bracelets.

A necklace is often easier to buy as a gift because you don't need to worry as much about wrist sizing or how someone prefers their bracelets to fits.

And because the necklace and bracelet cost the same, you can choose whichever style makes the most sense for the person receiving it.

When Would I Choose the Bracelet?

If you know someone loves bracelets, then absolutely go with the bracelet.

There's something I particularly enjoy about wearing Morse Code jewelry on my wrist.

I find myself running my fingers along the dots and dashes. It's a satisfying little tactile experience, but it also reminds me of the word or message I'm wearing.

For an I LOVE YOU bracelet, that could be a quiet reminder of someone special throughout the day.

Neither style is more meaningful than the other. It really comes down to what the recipient will actually enjoy wearing.

How I Make I LOVE YOU Morse Code Jewelry by Hand

Every Morse Code piece I make starts with solid sterling silver and a carefully planned arrangement of dots and dashes.

And while the finished design might look simple, getting everything exactly where it needs to be takes time.

Especially those dots.

Why the Placement of Every Dot Matters

When I'm making a Morse Code piece, I have to be incredibly careful about where each dot sits before I solder it into place.

The placement matters for both the design and the message.

And here's the frustrating part.

If I finish soldering and realize that one of those dots isn't in the correct position, I can't simply move it.

That piece is ruined.

I have to start again.

After more than 20 years of silversmithing, I've learned that sometimes the smallest details require the most attention.

I've even made my own tool specially to help me hold the dots in place while I work.

It's one of those little things that nobody would ever know by looking at the finished necklace, but it makes a difference in how I create each piece.

The dots and dashes are soldered into a stationary sterling silver design. They aren't loose beads sliding around on a string.

And every piece is made by hand in my Calgary studio.

What Do Customers Think About Giving Morse Code Jewelry?

One of the things I love hearing from customers is how much they appreciate the hidden meaning behind their jewelry.

A customer who bought a piece for her best friend's birthday shared:

"She LOVES it. Told me it's not only beautiful but the sort of 'secret code' is so sweet and meaningful."

Another customer, Meghan, described her collection of Morse Code bracelets as "quiet nerdy luxury."

I thought that was a pretty fantastic description.

She also mentioned loving the fact that her jewelry carries hidden messages without everyone else knowing what they say.

That's exactly the appeal for me.

You're not just wearing something pretty. You're wearing something that means something to you.

And nobody else has to know what that meaning is.

Can You Personalize an I LOVE YOU Morse Code Necklace?

Absolutely.

I LOVE YOU is a beautiful message on its own, but sometimes you might want to say something a little more personal.

Maybe you have a particular phrase you always say to your partner. Maybe there's an inside joke between you and your best friend. Or maybe your family has a special way of saying I love you.

That's where my Custom Morse Code Necklaces comes in.

I can turn your chosen word, name, or meaningful phrase into a handcrafted sterling silver necklace. Every piece in made in made in my Calgary studio, with the same attention to detail as my ready-to-wear designs.

Is I LOVE YOU Morse Code Jewelry a Good Gift?

I think it's a particularly thoughtful gift for a partner, daughter, mother, or best friend.

Not because it's some grand romantic gesture.

But because it's a simple reminder of something we probably don't say often enough.

I love you.

Three little words that can be surprisingly difficult to say sometimes.

Whether it's a parent sending their daughter off to college, a couple celebrating an anniversary, or a friend reminding another friend how much they matter, the message works for so many different relationships.

And that's what makes it special.

If you're still wondering whether Morse code jewelry is the right gift for someone, I've written an article answering exactly that question: Is Morse Code Jewelry a Good Gift?. I share my personal advice on choosing the right message, when Morse Code jewelry makes a meaningful gift, and when it might not be the best choice.

A Little Message with A Lot of Meaning

So, if you came here wondering what I LOVE YOU looks like in Morse Code, now you know.

•• | •-••   ---   •••-   • | -•--   ---   ••-

It's a series of dots and dashes that translates into three very meaningful words.

When I turn that message into a sterling silver necklace or bracelet, I'm creating something that can be worn, touched, and kept close.

A private reminder that someone loves you.

And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.
