Peridot: The Birthstone Everyone Loves to Hate… Until They Don’t

Spoiler: it's not just for August birthdays anymore.

Let's Talk Birthstones (and Bias)

Having worked in the jewelry world for over 20 years, I've heard it more times than I can count:

"Ugh, I hate my birthstone."

And honestly? I used to say the same thing—not about peridot, but about aquamarinemy birthstone. It took me years to warm up to it. Then something happened: I started pairing it with peridot.

Suddenly, everything clicked.

That soft sea-blue and vibrant chartreuse combo? Unexpected. Fresh. And a little bit magical.

So if you've written off peridot in the past, give me a second to change your mind. It might not be your birthstone—but it might just become your new favorite.

What Even is Peridot?

Lt's get nerdy for a sec. Peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, formed deep in the Earth's mantle and sometimes even delivered via meteorites (seriously). It's one of the few gemstones that only comes in one color: green.

Depending on how much iron is in the mix, that green can lean bright lime, deep olive, or even have golden undertones.

The Symbolism Behind Peridot

This gem has some serious feel-good energy. Historically, it was worn by Eqyptian royalty, called the "gem of the sun." and believed to ward off nightmares.

In modern crystal lore, it's known as the stone of positivity, linked to:

  • Emotional balance
  • Joy and optimism
  • New beginnings
  • Good fortune

So yeah, it might be the August birthstone, but its energy is welcome any time of year.

Why I Started Using Peridot in My Designs

I'm a silversmith, so I'm always looking at stones through the lens of how they'll wear, how they'll pair, and how they'll make you feel. Peridot turned out to be one of those gems people underestimate... until they see it set in sterling silver and realize how wearable and luminous it really is.

That's why I created a small collection of peridot rings, earrings, and pendants.

Styling tip: Peridot Plays Well with Others

One of the best parts of peridot? It's a layering dream.

Trying mixing it with:

  • Aquamarine - for a sea-meets-sun feel
  • Citrine - for a golden glow
  • Smoky Quartz - to keep the color crisp and cool

Care Tips: Keep That Glow

Peridot has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7, which means it can handle daily wear with a bit of care.

  • Clean with mild soap and a soft cloth
  • Skip ultrasonic or steam cleaners
  • Store separately to avoid scratches from harder gems

In Summary: Don't Sleep on Peridot

Peridot isn't just for August babies. It's for anyone who needs a reminder to stay grounded, joyful, and a little bit bold.

And if you're into jewelry that carries meaning and makes a statement? This is your stone.
