If you've been shopping for jewelry lately, you've probably noticed something: lab-grown stones are everywhere.
And with that comes a lot of opinions.
Are natural gemstones better because they came for the earth? Are lab-grown stones automatically the more ethical choice? Are they fake? Is one better for the environment? And what about the people whose livelihoods depend on mining?
The truth is much more interesting than "natural good, lab-grown bad" or vise versa.
Both natural and lab-grown gemstones have advantages, disadvantages and an environmental and human impact.
So rather than tell you which one you should buy, I want to break down the differences, the pros and cons, and some of the things that don't always make it onto a jewelry product page.
Because once you understand what you're buying, you can decide what matters most to you.
What's the Difference Between Natural and Lab-Grown Gemstones?

At the simplest level, the difference is where the gemstone came from.
Natural gemstones formed naturally within the earth and were eventually mined, cut and polished for use in jewelry.
Lab-grown gemstones are produced by people in controlled environments using technology designed to create gemstone material rather than waiting for geological processes to do it.
A true lab-grown gemstone has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as its natural counterpart, along with corresponding physical and optical properties. The key difference is how and where it formed.
A lab-grown diamond, for example, is a diamond.
A lab-grown ruby is ruby.
A lab-grown sapphire is sapphire.
What Do HPHT and CVD Mean?
If you've been looking at lab-grown diamonds, you may have come across the terms HPHT and CVD.
These are two major methods of producing laboratory-grown diamonds.
HPHT stands for High Pressure, High Temperature.
CVD stands for Chemical Vapor Deposition.
They use different processes to create diamond material, but both can produce laboratory-grown diamonds.
According to GIA, technological advances have made it possible to produce lab-grown diamonds in a wider range of sizes and qualities, and the industry has grown significantly over the past 2 decades.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) explains that laboratory-grown diamonds share many gemological and physical properties with natural diamonds. Distinguishing them reliably can require specialized analytical testing.
That does not mean every man-made stone sold in jewelry is a lab-grown version of a natural gemstone. Simulants are something different, which we'll get to in a minute.
Lab-Grown, Lab-Creates, Synthetic... What Do All These Names Mean?
Gemstone terminology gets confusing very quickly, especially because everyday language and gemmological language don't always mean the same thing.
Terms You May See for Natural Gemstones
Depending on the jeweler, retailer or supplier, you might see:
- Natural gemstone
- Natural stone
- Mined gemstone
- Earth-mined gemstone
- Natural diamond
- Mined diamond
- Genuine gemstone
- Precious gemstone
- Semi-precious gemstone
- Earth-created stones
Generally, these terms are intended to tell you the gemstone formed naturally rather than being manufactured.
But here's something worth knowing: Natural doesn't necessarily mean untreated.
Natural gemstones may undergo accepted treatments to improve color, clarity, durability or appearance.
Depending on the gemstone, treatments can include heating, oiling, irradiation, dyeing, fracture filling or another enhancement.
A treated natural gemstone is still natural because the gemstone itself formed in the earth.
Treatment disclosure matters, particularly because treatments can affect value, durability and how a stone should be cared for.
Terms You May See for Lab-Grown Gemstones
You may see:
- Lab-grown stone or gemstone
- Laboratory-grown gemstone
- Lab-created gemstone
- Laboratory-created gemstone
- Synthetic gemstone
- Cultured gemstone
- Man-made gemstone
- Created gemstone
- Engineered gemstones
In gemmology, synthetic does not necessarily mean fake.
A synthetic gemstone is generally a man-made material that has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and physical properties as its natural counterpart.
The word may sound less appealing from a marketing perspective, which is one reason you're more likely to see terms such as "lab-grown" or "lab-created" when you're shopping.
What About Simulated Gemstones?
A simulated or imitation stone is a material designed to have the appearance of a gemstone but does not have the same chemical composition or crystal structure.
Swarovski Crystal is a good example. Swarovski crystals are precision-cut manufactured crystal glass. They can provide beautiful color and brilliance in jewelry, but they aren't lab-grown gemstones.
Cubic zirconia and Moissanite are another examples. It is often used as a diamond simulant because it can look similar to a diamond, but chemically and structurally it is a different material. The same distinction applies to glass, plastic, and other imitation materials.
So although the terms sometimes get lumped together, lab-grown and simulated aren't interchangeable:
Natural emerald: formed in the earth
Lab-grown emerald: emerald material created by people
Green Swarovski Crystal: manufactured crystal glass that can resemble a gemstone like emerald.
None of these descriptions tells you whether something is "good" or "bad." They simply tell you when comparing jewelry what you're actually buying, which is the important part.

Pros of Natural Gemstones
1. Rarity and History
There's something pretty incredible about wearing a material that formed naturally inside the earth.
Natural gemstones are finite geological materials, and some formed over extraordinarily long periods of time.
For people who love natural stones, that history is part of their appeal.
2. Every Stone Has Its Own Character
Natural stones often contain variations in color, inclusions and other characteristics created during formation.
Those little differences mean two stones from the same mineral family can look completely different.
Personally, I think that's part of their charm.
3. Natural Stones Are Inherently Limited
A natural gemstone deposit can eventually be depleted. That natural scarcity is fundamentally different from a gemstone material that can continue to be manufactured.
That can contribute to the desirability and value of certain high-quality natural gemstones.
4. They Support a Large Global Supply Chain
Natural gemstone mining and processing provide livelihoods for millions of people around the world, particularly in areas where alternation employment may be limited.
We'll come back to this because it is one of the most complicated parts of the ethical gemstone conversation.

Cons of Natural Gemstones
1. Mining Has an Environmental Impact
You can't remove material from the earth without affecting the environment.
Depending on the type, location and scale of the mine, impacts can include:
- Land disturbance
- Habitat loss
- High water usage
- Waste rock and tailings
- Soil erosion
- Water contamination
- Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
Those impacts vary enormously from one mine to another.
A large industrial mine and a small artisanal gemstone mine are very different operations, which is one reason broad statements about the environmental footprint of "mining" can be misleading.
2. Working Conditions Can Vary Dramatically
This is another reason sourcing matters.
In her 2026 Jewellery Business article, gemmologist Lauriane Lognay describes visiting gemstone mining and cutting operations in several countries and observing dramatically different working environments.
Some operations are highly organized. Others rely on artisanal miners working with basic tools and limited infrastructure.
Determining whether a gemstone is ethically sourced therefore involves much more then knowing that it is natural. Working conditions, wages, environmental practices and the economic effects on surrounding communities can all matter.
3. Natural Stones Usually Cost More
Mining, sorting, cutting, transportation, rarity, quality and market demand all contribute to the final price of a natural gemstone.
For someone who simply wants a beautiful colored stone, a lab-grown option may make a larger or higher-clarity gemstone accessible at a lower price.
What is the Kimberley Process?
You've probably heard the terms conflict diamond or blood diamond.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was launched in 2003 as an international effort to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate rough diamond trade.
Participating countries implement controls on shipments of rough diamonds, and international shipments between participants must be accompanied by Kimberley Process certificates.
It was an important response to diamonds being used by rebel movements to finance armed conflict.
But there are limitations.
The Kimberley Process focuses specifically on rough diamonds connected with rebel movements seeking to undermine legitimate governments. It was not designed as a universal certification of fair wages, safe working conditions, environmental responsibility in every possible human-rights issue in the diamond supply chain.
So, a Kimberley Process-compliant diamond should not automatically be interpreted as a guarantee that every part of its journey was environmentally or socially responsible.
And importantly, the Kimberley Process applies to rough diamonds, not colored gemstones as a whole.
That distinction gets lost surprisingly often.
Lab-Grown Gemstones: The Pros and Cons

Pros of Lab-Grown Gemstones
1. They're Usually More Affordable
One of the biggest advantages of lab-grown gemstones is price.
Because production isn't dependant on discovering and extracting a limited natural deposit, lab-grown stones can make certain colors, sizes, and qualities accessible at a lower price.
That can mean:
- A larger gemstone for your budget
- More consistent color
- Higher apparent clarity
- Access to gemstones varieties that might otherwise be expensive
2. They Don't Require Gemstone Mining
Creating a gemstone in a controlled facility avoids the direct land disturbance associated with extracting that particular stone from the earth.
That's a meaningful advantage.
3. Production Origin Can Be Easier to Identify
Because a lab-grown gemstone originates in a manufacturing facility rather than travelling from a mine through potentially numerous traders, its point of production can sometimes be easier to identify.
How transparent the entire supply chain is still depends on the manufacturer and supplier.
4. Consistency
Controlled production can make it easier to produce stones with consistent color and quality.
That can be particularly useful when creating matching earrings, sets or repeatable jewelry designs.

Cons of Lab-Grown Stones
1. They're Not Naturally Rare
A laboratory can continue producing gemstone material as long as there is demand, equipment, raw material and energy.
That makes their scarcity fundamentally different from natural gemstones.
2. Resale Expectations Can Be Different
Loose lab-grown gemstones shouldn't automatically be purchased with the expectation that they'll retain their original retail price.
To be fair, I don't think most jewelry should be purchased solely as an investment. You should buy it because you love it and want to wear it.
But if rarity, collectability or potential resale matters to you, it's something worth considering.
3. Production Requires Energy
Lab-grown doesn't mean impact-free.
Producing gemstones in controlled environments can require significant heat, pressure, specialized equipment and electricity.
The environmental footprint can therefore depend heavily on where the facility gets its electricity.
A facility powered substantially by renewable electricity may have a very different carbon footprint from one powered primarily by fossil fuels.
This is why I hesitate when I see lab-grown gemstone automatically described as "eco-friendly," "green" or "sustainable."
Those claims need context.
Which Is Better for the Environment?
Here's where the conversation gets frustrating if you're looking for one simple answer.
Neither option is impact-free.
Natural gemstone production can involve:
- Land disturbance
- Water use
- Habitat disruption
- Waste
- Transportation
- Energy use
Lab-grown gemstone production can involve:
- Significant electricity consumption
- High temperatures and/or pressure
- Industrial manufacturing equipment
- Raw materials
- Manufacturing infrastructure
So saying:
Natural = environmentally bad
and
Lab-grown = environmentally good
doesn't tell the whole story.
The better question is: How was this particular stone produced?
For a natural gemstone, that means looking at the mine, mining practices, environmental protections and supply chain.
For a lab-grown gemstone, that means looking at the production method, facility and energy source.
There isn't one universal environmental footprint for either category.
Employment and Human Impact: The Part We Don't Talk About Enough

There are people behind every piece of jewelry, from the people who produce the stones and metal to the person who eventually turns those materials into something you wear.
When we talk about ethical gemstones, it's easy to focus entirely on the environment.
But there are people on both sides of this conversation too.
Natural Gemstones and Mining Communities
The World Bank estimates that artisanal and small-scale mining directly employs at least 45 million people across 80 countries, with another 270 million people working in related services.
That means approximately 315 million people worldwide are directly or indirectly connected to the sector.
The World Bank also describes artisanal and small-scale mining as the top non-farm rural employer in most mineral-rich countries.
This helps explain why the environmental and human sides of mining can't always be separated.
Natural gemstone production can support:
- Miners
- Sorters
- Traders
- Cutters
- Polishers
- Transportation workers
- Local businesses
- Jewelry manufacturers
Income earned for mining can circulate through communities as workers spend money on food, housing, education and other necessities.
Lognay makes a similar point in Jewellery Business, observing that the impact of gemstone mining cannot be evaluated solely by looking at the physical mine. The livelihood and economic effects on the surrounding community matter too.
But Employment Doesn't Automatically Make Mining Ethical
Those numbers don't mean the system is without serious problems.
The World Bank also points to poor working conditions, social vulnerabilities and environmental degradation associated with unregulated artisanal and small-scaling mining.
It recommendations focus on greater professionalization and regulation, occupational health and safety, environmental stewardship, access to technology and stronger partnerships between miners, governments and industry.
Lognay's observations of gemstone mining communities reinforce how much conditions can differ between locations.
So the question shouldn't simply be:
"Does mining create jobs?"
It clearly does.
The better questions are:
What kind of jobs? Under what conditions? And who actually benefits?
Botswana Shows How Complicated This Can Become
Botswana is an interesting example of how deeply a country's economy can become connected to natural resources.
According to the World Band, Botswana historically managed its diamond revenues well, but its economy remains heavily dependent on diamonds. In its April 2025 analysis, the World Bank reported that diamonds accounted for more than 70% of Botswana's total exports.
That dependence creates vulnerability when the diamond market slows.
Botswana's economy contracted by 3.1% in 2024, and the World Bank identified the sharp decline in diamond revenue as a significant contributor to the country's deteriorating fiscal position. The organization argues that Botswana needs to diversify its economy and develop new sources of productivity, business growth and employment.
This adds another layer to the natural vs. lab-grown conversation.
A move away from mined diamonds isn't only about what happens to the land where diamonds are extracted. Changes in global demand can also affect countries, businesses, workers and communities whose economies have become dependent on those natural recourses.
That doesn't mean we should continue mining simply to preserve jobs, and it doesn't erase legitimate environmental of labour concerns.
It means the human and economic consequences deserve to be part of the conversation too.
What About Employment in Lab-Grown Gemstones?
Lab-grown gemstone production creates jobs too, but they're different jobs.
Employment can include:
- Engineers
- Laboratory technician
- Manufacturing workers
- Equipment operators
- Quality-control specialists
- Cutters and polishers
Manufacturing gemstones in controlled facilities avoids some of the physical hazards associated with extracting stones from the earth.
But shifting demand from mined gemstones to manufactured gemstones can also shift economic activity away from traditional mining communities and toward industrial manufacturing centres.
Again, neither side fits neatly into a "good" or "bad" box.
What Does "Ethical Gemstone" Actually Mean?
This might be my biggest takeaway from researching this topic:
Ethical isn't a simple label.
Lognay makes this point particularly well in her discussion of gemstone sourcing. Different people prioritize different ethical concerns, and verifying every part of a gemstone's journey can be extremely difficult.
One stone might:
- provide essential income to an artisanal mining community
- but come from a region with limited environmental regulation
Another might:
- be created without mining
- but require energy from a carbon-intensive electricity grid
Another natural gemstone might:
- come from a highly regulated mine
- provide well-paid employment
- have documented environmental restoration practices
There isn't necessarily one perfect answer.
That doesn't mean we throw our hands up and stop caring.
It means we ask better questions.
Questions Worth Asking About Any Gemstone
Whether you're considering a natural or lab-grown gemstone, you can ask:
- Where did the gemstone come from?
- Is the country of origin or production known?
- Is the supplier transparent bout sourcing?
- Who cut and polished the stone?
- What is known about working conditions?
- What environmental practices were involved?
- Has a natural stone been treated or enhanced?
- If it's lab-grown, where was it produced?
- What is known about the facility's energy source?
- Is "ethical," "sustainable" or "eco-friendly" being backed by actual information?
You may not get an answer to every question.
The gemstone supply chain can be complicated.
But transparency is a much better starting point than assuming a label tells you everything you need to know.

So, Which Should You Choose?

Choose natural gemstones if you're particularly drawn to:
- Natural formation
- Geological history
- Rarity
- Individual variation
- The idea that no two stones are quite alike.
Choose lab-grown gemstones if you're particularly drawn to:
- A lower price point
- Consistency
- Larger or higher-clarity stones within your budget
- Avoiding direct gemstone mining
- Modern gemstone-growing technology
But you don't actually have to choose a "team."
You can own both.
You might love a natural emerald because of its inclusions and history and choose a lab-grown sapphire because you fell in love with the color.
Jewelry doesn't need to became another thing we have to be perfect at.
Understanding what you're buying is far more useful than being told there's only one correct choice.

Final Thoughts From a Silversmith

At my bench wearing a mix of gemstone stacking rings I’ve made over the years.
After more than 20 years of working with jewelry, this is where I land:
The stone matters.
Where it came from matters.
How it was produced matters.
The people involved matter.
But jewelry is also deeply personal.
Part of the reason I decided to dig into this topic is because I want to work with more gemstones in my jewelry. And the more I started looking into natural and lab-grown stones, the more questions I had about where they came from, how they were produced and what" ethical" really means when it comes to gemstones.
Researching this article has also made me realize that I want to do a better job of sharing what I know about the stones I use.
Going forward, I'll be adding more sourcing information to my product listings whenever it's available, including whether a stone is natural, lab-grown or simulated, any known treatments, and its origin when I can confirm it.
I also have gemstones in my collection that I purchased more than 20 years ago when I was in college. I may not be able to trace every one of those stones back to its original source. Rather than guess, I'll be transparent about what I know, what I don't know, and do my best to find the information when I can.
I don't expect every stone to come with a perfect story or a perfectly traceable history. But I can ask better questions when I'm sourcing new stones and give you more information so you can make your own decision.
Whether your stone spent millions of years forming inside the earth or was grown using modern technology, you're the person who gives the finished piece its meaning.
My job is to tell you as much as I can about what you're buying, then let you decide what matters to you.
No guilt.
Just better information, better questions, and jewelry you genuinely love wearing.
